First, I was attracted by its shape. And the very next second by its cover. Then, I learned its story.
Modus:cover is a cupboard distinguished by the fashion prevalent on the day it was built. The cupboard is covered with fashion magazines from its birthday, and is thereafter stained in black and varnished, and the magazines show through ever so slightly. A secret shelf inside the cupboard hides a magazine in original. The inspiration for this piece of furniture comes in part from the magical moment when one renovating an old house finds newspapers, as old as the house, behind the wallpaper. The historical context of the building suddenly stands before you!

Something seemed familiar at this cupboard and my intuition was right. The designer of Modus:cover is Fredrik Färg, whom I knew from Stockholm Furniture Fair. He is actually one of the winners of Glimåkra Designers Prize, distinction received for his Coat chair:

The intention with this chair was to fight against the trend of easy replacement of furniture and to create more confortable and durable pieces. Pieces that you fell in love with and you don’t get rid of them easily.

RE:cover – Bespoke dresses for old chairs.
On the same mindset, along with Modus:cover, Fredrik Fräg presented at Salone Satellite 2009 a range of found chairs rejuvenated with felt coverings.

The fabric structures are inspired by vintage tailoring.

The project looks to the beauty of those shapes that never change. Fredrik takes his inspiration from classic tailoring, such as suits and dinner jackets that never go out of style.

Material: Old chairs and a new cover of 100% recyclable polyester felt.

What is it about these fairs that make people crazy, paying flight tickets (closing one eye on inflated carbon prints), booking one year in advance their hotel, ordering guides and making seletion maps? I believe is the enthousiasm. And meeting the youngsters.
Today, we’ll talk about about one of our findings while strolling relaxed but aware around Greenhouse – young designers pavillion inside Stockholm Fair. Jonas Wagell‘s “design with a smile” motto flanged over his entire collection for the newly appeared Swedish brand Happy Industry.
Playfull and colored, the objects are either taken out a fairytale or creating one for each of us. Meet the Odds , Bold, Cage, Symbio, Etore and Tilt. Let’s see what they’re up to.

Odd
Lamps, bowls and vases

Meet the Odd family, a product series consisting of four pendant lamps and four bowls. The items have a playful and strong character created by combining a colourful bowl in aluminium with a base of solid birch or white ceramic in various ways. And upside-down.

Bold
Wall Clocks

These wall clock tell time loudly with bold colours and chubby features, yet has a whispering simplicity with it’s honest and simple shape. Bold comes in two sizes. The small clock is 30 cm in diameter and the large one is fifty.

Symbio
Table lamp

Symbiosis is a table lamp with classic features, suited for modern low energy light bulbs. The table lamp is designed to aesthetically fit the new dimmable low energy globes. The simple and analogue features enhance an old-fashioned feeling and further distract attention from the modern light source.

Cage
Multi-purpose baskets

Cage is a set of multi-purpose baskets with a contemporary design inspired by old-fashioned fruit harvest baskets. The baskets come in three sizes. The smallest one is ideal as a fruit basket since the open design allows airflow and prevent the fruit from going bad and the largest size is perfect for containing wood by the fire place.

Etore
Candlesticks

Etore is a playful candle stick with a simple shape, but strong character. Its geometrical form is homage to the design language which had its greatest era
during the mid Eighties.

Tilt
Candleholder

The heavy, rounded base makes the candle holder tilt, but never tip over.
The candle holder Tilt is part of a product series in glass which also include a bowl and two vases, all sharing the same characteristic shape.

So, which character were you?

Happy Industry

One of the Nordic brands that manages to overcome our expectations, Muuto, presented some new “items-to-possess” at Maison&Objet in Paris.
Below are the ones we’ve got a crush on.

Raw Family – chair and candelabra

Jens Fager on the design: “Raw is a product family based on rough and intuitive interpretations of iconic everyday objects. Every piece is unique because they are all made of a piece of wood carved by hand with a band saw machine. With strong yet iconic look they can easily be placed anywhere in your home, at the office or at the restaurant. The Raw family is available in limited editions in various colours.”

Stacked shelving system

JDS Architects on the design: “How to be specific and generic altogether? Shelving systems have a tendency to achieve one concern but never both. We decided to dimension shelving units based on the generic measurements of things to store and display while allowing for them to be combined according to specific needs and desires… the result can be at times a random stack of boxes or a coordinated grid of efficient storage… or both!”

E 27 socket pendant lamp

Mattias Stahlbom on the design: “The simplicity of the naked bulb is hard to compete with. It stands for something that feels romantic and contemporary at the same time. E 27 departs from the essence of a lamp – the socket – creating a simple yet strong object that celebrates the potential beauty in simplicity.”
