Did you had the chance to meet Clocky, the alarm clock that runs away from your sidetable with his cute wheels? Than we would like to introduce you Tocky, his little brother. This useful invention is released under U.S. Nanda Home label and it is presented at the NY Gift Fair this week. For 79$ you get a rolling plastic clock, available with easy to replace color skins, USB plug for uploading MP3 alarm sounds and a useful microphone to record your own messages. You can change alarms and hour with the help of the touch sensitive interface around the display. Even thought I have no problem waking up in the morning I’m still gonna buy one just for the fun of catching it around the bedroom.

Gabriel Tan and Wendy Chua from Singapore, Gustavo Maggio from Argentina and Sebastián Alberdi from Spain are four talented, award winning designers that met in 2005 at the Electrolux Design Lab, in Stockholm. They kept in touch and one year later decided to take it up a notch and formed Outofstock, an integrated studio offering interior and product design services.

This year we were pleased to see seven of their pieces within Salone Sattelite in Milan. Besides the final products, what caught our attention was the work that lies behind it, a collective effort based on the inspiration and values of four people that come from different corners of the world.
Gabriel Tan was pleased to answer some questions for Designro, as you’ll see in the interview bellow.

DESIGNRO: How does a team whose members come from different corners of the world, all with different cultural background collaborate?

Gabriel Tan: Coming from different cultural backgrounds makes our creative dialogues more interesting as we have different life experiences and perspectives on design and the world. It takes a lot of commitment and dedication to work together on a regular basis when we are based in different cities, and thankfully the four of us were never short on that.

DESIGNRO: Your team fusion after you met in Stockholm. On what level is your vision towards a product influenced by the Scandinavian style?

Gabriel Tan: I wouldn’t say we are influenced by the Scandinavian style as we were only in Stockholm for a workshop and did not live there. However we share a common admiration for the honest usage of materials, smart details and well-controlled form.

DESIGNRO: Could you describe the steps of the creative process while working on a project?

Gabriel Tan: For a client-based commission we always start with understanding the client and finding as much as we can about the company, and then doing a relevant research on the end-user, how they live and interact with the space or product. We try not to look at other competitors on the market before we start designing, and try to find additional inspiration from everyday objects, nature or literature. However, we always make a check or survey of the market once we have a few concepts in mind, so that we can filter out any ideas that have already been done before. We believe in originality.

DESIGNRO: Was your presence at Salone Satellite this year prolific? Did you have any interests coming from producers?

Gabriel Tan: Yes we did have a very positive response from producers. We are currently developing some of the projects with firmly interested producers and we hope they can be on the market next year.

DESIGNRO: Could you give us a background story for the pieces presented in Milan as far as inspiration goes?

Gabriel Tan: Well, this year we wanted to try working with new materials and techniques that we never tried before so therefore you see glass, as well as plywood bending pieces in the collection. It was less about a poetic story but rather exploring connections and structures, as can be seen in Easy Chair and V-shelves. The raft sofa was trying to address the lifestyle of people today who move around a lot and so may only want to invest money in a sofa that they can bring along to their next home. The Boya Lamp was about the interesting combination and connection of two materials, while the Mute chair and Biscuit stool were about honest forms and subtle woodworking details.

DESIGNRO: Were the pieces presented in Milan prototypes?

Gabriel Tan: What we presented at the Salone Satellite this year are prototypes. Although for Biscuit Stool and Mute Chair we recently made a limited production run for two new restaurants that we designed. For the designs in production we have Black Forest (Ligne Roset), Glide Chair and Hull Table (for Foundry), Arbor Desk and Naked Chair (for Bolia, Denmark).

Mute Chair

A chair in solid maple whose understated elegance is expressed though the seamless transitions between its curved seat, legs and backrest.

Biscuit Stool

A stool in solid oak, Biscuit is a trusty companion for breakfast or afternoon tea. The seat edge is gently curved for a pleasant seating and tactile experience. Robust legs in turned wood are strengthened with criss-crossed dowels, completing a stool which uses no screws in its construction.

Easy Chair

A generously proportioned easy chair made of bent laminated plywood, with the front and rear leg structures stacked to form a stable brace support. Finished in maple wood veneer.

Boya

A table or bedside lamp inspired by nautical beacons and marine buoys. Lamp base in turned solid oak or walnut and lamp shade in grey tinted blown glass.

V Shelves

A laminated plywood shelf that has a gentle ”v” at one end to enable the user to display an open book. The two wall-fixation components that resemble books in shape and size also act as bookends.

Raft Sofa

A sofa suited for today’s nomadic lifestyle and shrinking apartment sizes. The gaps between the solid ash rods allow for the seat and backrest cushions to be strapped onto it. Its raft-inspired base frame can be disassembled completely for easy transportation through narrow stairways and doors. Modularity is possible with a longer base frame and more cushions.

Hues Table

Inspired by the overlay of colors in venn diagrams, this set of nesting tables is composed of waterjet-cut low iron glass tops that are sandblasted and coloured. Legs and support frame in painted steel.

Branko Nikolic, Petar Savic and Milan Stefanovic are Serbia’s new exported talents on Europe’s design scene. All three graduated the Belgrade Art University and after collaborating on several projects, founded Antipod Studio.

Their idea was to include consciousness as one of the key pointers in the design process – ethics before esthetics. Their work involves multidisciplinary projects in the field of architecture, interior, and furniture design and is based on certain adopted principles that they highly respect: simplicity, innovation, sincerity, adequacy, inconspicuousness, sustainability.
Alongside with other eleven exceptional projects, some of their products were showcased in the exhibit Young Serbian Designers within Salone Satellite Milan, all selected by a jury chaired by world renowned designer Konstantin Grčić .

TRIANGLE a modular table of a simple geometric form. A cube is cut diagonally, which makes it combinable. It can be placed alone or combined into larger, more diverse compositions, placed in a corner or stacked one upon the other as an improvised shelf. If painted in two contrasting colors (inner and outer surface) it becomes particularly attractive.

TEAT is a three-legged stool, a contemporary interpretation of side seating, obviously inspired by the rural. The idea was to achieve a contemporary form, but to remind us of the primeveal. The inspiration was combining symetrical forms produced on the turning-lathe. It is simple to make, eco-friendly, suitable for industrial production or simple manufacture.

Coordinated by the contemporary design platform DMY Berlin in collaboration with Create Berlin, designers and creative labs from Berlin gathered during Milan week of design 2010 for the exhibition „Made in Berlin – Open Process“, revealing new prototypes and innovative concepts for future living spaces.
Set up in the environment of a garage, the exhibition provided a closer look at the design processes, going from the very first inspiration and concept, beyond various testing phases to the prototypes.
Here, we were able to have a first look at Berlin’s young design studio newest lamp collection – Malva. Ett la benn’s products stand out due to their high level of innovation and offer new approaches in terms of materials, functioning and application and Malva lamps are a fine example of their vision.

The collection is inspired by the natural qualities of cellulose and viscose: the objects are generated by the forming of moistened sponge cloth and its subsequent hardening by air drying on a mould. The translation of this customary material into individual design pieces through basic processes of forming and drying measures up to the highest demands in sustainability and eco friendliness: all objects are compostable.
Next on agenda, Malva travel to New York where there will be exhibited and sold at ABC Home during North America’s singular showcase for contemporary design, the ICFF.

Quite a surprise Milan this year. Made me wonder if my reading of the latest economic and environmental events and directions was overenthusiastic, picturing a rigorous selection of novelties when it comes to brand coherence, market understanding and, should I even mention it?! sustainable materials.

From this latter perspective, Milan experience seemed a loop back in time to 50s wood keenness and feel. A pleasing scene, no doubt, to see the design richness of the period being reinterpreted again, with new interests and concerns. However, an unexpected use of materials.

Take Staffan Holm’s Wedge and Karusell stools for instance: a conversation between contemporary design and manufacturing techniques, inspired by the time limitations and constrictions made people generate ingenious and simple solutions.
Staffan Holm

Studio Juju’s Platypus chair, on the other hand, managed to create, based on behavior understanding, a chair that offers new experiences: since we carry out little things all he time, there are numerous things to do in a chair that affords an extra space by having an exaggerated arm.
Studio Juju

A kitchen rack that encourages the home growing of herbs and vegetables is clearly a salutary creation, may it even not be made out of the most sustainable wood. Sunday is Reinhard Dienes’s modular, organized storage solution for kitchen tools and appliances.
Reinhard Dienes

Speaking of kitchen and sustainable wood, here’s an interesting combination: Quinze & Milan new One Leg Down table and stool are clearly inspired by the kitchen chopping board, and they even borrow hip countertop material, Corian. The result: two extremely simple, yet striking in contrast pine wood pieces, which designer Soren Rose stresses to be excellent in sustainability.
Quinze&Milan

Our selection of well-used wood at Milan and sustainable conclusions is to be continued.

Mathieu is a maverick. He is floating between product design, science, biology, furniture and interior design. He is a breath of fresh air (literally!) among the star system designers of today. His pieces are not perfect (I own an Andrea purifier and is quite tricky to water the plant) but they are opening discussions about the future of the technology and our domestic landscape. One of his latest creations has an unusual glam factor for his regular output but is nevertheless charming. Delicious range of storage units for Tools Galerie is appealing as a hip Chanel bag or a mouthwatering Belgian chocolate. The collection will be in show from 2nd of April until 29th of May in the Metal(s) collective show at Tools Galerie, 119 rue Vieille du Temple, Paris. Some of the modules are already available for sale but I would love to see this range included in the portfolio of a contemporary design brand such as Cappellini or Established&Sons. Hearing anyone?
Their Milk lamp follows local habit of working wood and glass and creates a cosy atmosphere wherever it is placed. It is the first item in a series of sensory design for the home. Makes you think of the Japanese spa in a way.

The works of Line Depping have a great ability of adapting themselves, as they acknowledge no object serves only one purpose, nor is it used in just one way. It’s because they’ve been created following the way people live and behave.

Take Tatami for instance: inspired by the Japanese way of using a tatami room, it changes from a chaise-lounge to a couch with room for your tea cup, by differently placing its loose, wool pillows.

And what’s great about these designs is they aim perfection, but leaving room for the imperfect and the irrational. Just like real people.

A square matrix of symmetrically arranged characters will tell you what time it is, by glowing a white light. The brightness adapts according to the ambient light, forming the words that describe the time.

Its front surface (which can be changed in different colours, materials and languages) is supported by 8 magnets, so that no visible attachments are involved.
